Standing up to Russian Aggression in Ukraine
We must stand with the people of Ukraine against this totalitarian dictatorship.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has created a dangerous crisis in Ukraine that threatens the peace and stability of Europe and the world. The invasion is an act of naked aggression and a violation of international law which can not be tolerated by the United States and our NATO allies.
Russia has made little effort to justify this invasion, daring the world to go to war. No justification can be made to destabilize and threaten an independent and sovereign nation. There have been few times in our country’s history when the prospect of a world war has loomed so large. I know that the Biden administration is considering many options to curtail Russian power and defend the people of Ukraine. Among those are sanctions that would cut off the Russian economy from the rest of the world, cyber attacks that may seek to disable Russian military capabilities, and as a last resort, the involvement of the US military.
While we would expect that all Americans would stand up for the sovereignty of the government of Ukraine and the safety and independence of the people of Ukraine, there are some in this country who feel that a far-right strongman like Putin is a figure to be admired. I must condemn those who domestically have sought to undermine support for Ukrainian defense, who praise this Russian military aggression.
